Germany's best health insurance

Germany's best health insurance
Always a winner: Techniker Krankenkasse first in the Focus-Money health insurer test for the tenth time in a row.

How the test works

Together with experts from the independent financial service institute Deutsches Finanz-Service Institut (DFSI), Focus-Money analysed a total of 73 regional and national health insurers on the basis of over 300 questions. The analysts found that the Techniker Krankenkasse offered the best cover of all insurers tested.

Germany's doctors agree

Who would you recommend? For many patients, their doctor is an important advisor not just on health issues, but also on the choice of health insurer. Focus-Money used an online survey to ask more than 10,000 doctors and dentists which health insurer they would, based on their experience, recommend. TK came top of nationwide health insurers with more than two million members.

The health insurer comparison "Deutschlands beste Krankenkasse" – "Germany's best health insurer" – can be found in the latest issue of Focus-Money (6/2016).
A great routine: for the tenth time in a row, Focus-Money has tested German health insurers. And for the tenth time, the business magazine has concluded that the Techniker is Germany's best health insurer – head and shoulders above the rest.
The comparison examined the insurers' entire portfolio from cover and quality of service to the choice of rates and supplementary insurance. In eight out of eleven categories, TK received the highest rating: "excellent".

German social security

German social security

The German system of social security provides comprehensive protection from the vicissitudes of life. It is based on what’s called the principle of solidarity.
This means that each insuree makes a contribution towards financing social security depending on the individual (financial) ability. Having said that, the benefits are always the same for all insurees.

Social security is based on five pillars:
  • Health insurance
  • Long-term care insurance
  • Pension insurance
  • Unemployment insurance
  • Accident insurance

Insurance for employees

Almost without exception, German law views employees as requiring particular protection because they depend on their ability to work in order to earn a living. This is why employees are generally ‘automatically’ insured in all five branches of social security (health, long-term care, pension, unemployment and accident insurance).

This is largely a question of so-called compulsory insurance which takes effect immediately upon starting a job. Employees and employers cannot avoid insurance obligation by making an arrangement or signing an agreement.

There are, however, some exceptions, for marginal part-time or temporary jobs or in the case of income above a certain threshold, for example.

Employees - with few exceptions - do not have to take care of insurance cover themselves. However they need to decide which health insurance fund they want cover from. The employer calculates the social security contributions, deducts the employee’s contribution from their salary and pays the collected contributions. The employer also registers employees with their chosen health insurance fund at the start of employment.
